            The Centers provide health insurance for over 74 million Americans through         Medicare, Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program         (SCHIP) and make data on the programs available to beneficiaries, providers,        and researchers.

  • Children’s Defense Fund: www.childrensdefense.org       
            CDF advocates for children, encouraging the prevention of illness, school         drop-out, and family breakdown, with particular attention to poor and         minority children and those with disabilities. CDF is also a resource         for information on SCHIP.     
  • Families USA: www.familiesusa.org       
            Families USA is a national nonprofit, non-partisan organization working         to improve health and long-term care coverage for all Americans. Families         USA manages a grassroots advocates’ network of organizations working         for the consumer perspective in national and state health policy debates,        produces reports, serves as a consumer clearinghouse for information         about the health care system, and provides training and technical assistance         to state and community-based organizations addressing health care problems.

            The Center for Health Policy Research conducts research and policy analysis         on health policy issues, including identifying, monitoring, and analyzing         emerging issues in federal health law and policy and evaluating the         effects of changing federal policies on states, communities, and the         health care system.

            The Bazelon Center is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization working         to ensure that people with mental disabilities have a decent place to         live, supportive services, and equality of opportunity, including access         to Medicaid and private insurance coverage for mental health care.     
  • Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured:        www.kff.org
            The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation is an independent philanthropy         focusing on the major health care issues facing the nation. The Foundation         develops and runs its own research and communication programs, often         in partnership with outside organizations, focusing on health policy,        media and public education, and health and development in South Africa.

            NCSL is a bipartisan organization working to improve the quality and         effectiveness of state legislatures, to foster interstate communication         and cooperation, and to ensure legislatures a strong voice in the federal         system. The Conference is a source of research and publications about         State-administered programs.     
  • National Health Law Program: www.healthlaw.org       
            NHeLP is a national public interest law firm working to improve health         care for the working and unemployed poor, minorities, the elderly, and         people with disabilities. NHeLP sponsors legal services programs, community-based         organizations, the private bar, providers and individuals who work to         preserve a health care safety net for the millions of uninsured or underinsured         low-income people.

            The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds work to improve health and         health care for all Americans. The Foundation focuses its grantmaking         on ensuring that all Americans have access to basic health care at reasonable         cost; improving care and support for people with chronic health conditions,        and promoting health and preventing disease by reducing the harm caused         by addiction.
