Advocating for SAMHSA Reauthorization
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), works to improve the quality and availability of substance abuse prevention, alcohol and drug addiction treatment, and mental health services. Though legislation authorizing SAMHSA has expired, funding continues to be allocated by Congress. Although the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee began work on legislation to reauthorize SAMHSA during the second session of the 100th Congress, it is unlikely that work will be completed during this Congress. SAMHSA continues to be a LAC priority and staff continue to advocate for the strongest possible legislation.
