LAC Honors Daniel K. Mayers and Esta E. Stecher
On Tuesday, November 10th, 2009, Legal Action Center honored this year’s recipients of the Arthur Liman Public Interest Award: Daniel K. Mayers and Esta E. Stecher. A retired senior partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr LLP, Mr. Mayers has been on LAC's Board of Directors for 31 years and Chairman for the last 11 years. Ms. Stecher is the Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Goldman Sachs, and is nationally recognized for her outstanding corporate leadership, distinguished legal career, and philanthropic activities.
The event, held at the Tribeca Rooftop in New York City, was chaired by Stephen M. Cutler, the General Counsel at JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Brad S. Karp, Firm Chairman of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP.
The Arthur Liman Public Interest Awards were established in 1998 to honor the memory of Arthur L. Liman, LAC’s co-founder and Board Chair for 25 years. The awards acknowledge superior achievements in addressing issues at the core of LAC’s mission—alcohol/drug addiction, HIV/AIDS, and criminal justice. The Liman Awards are presented at LAC's annual benefit, which raises money to support the work of the Legal Action Center and its Arthur Liman Policy Institute.

About LAC For over 35 years, LAC has been at the forefront of the fight against discrimination aimed at people with criminal records, histories of addiction, and/or HIV/AIDS and has advocated for sound public policy in these areas. Through litigation, education, and state and national advocacy, we have crafted a unique, multifaceted approach to our mission and to serving our constituents. Last year alone, we provided free legal assistance for more than 2,800 people to combat discrimination and protect individual privacy. This year, we played a leading role in reforming the discredited Rockefeller drug laws, and our work in the national healthcare reform ebate has lead to getting both mandated coverage and parity for addiction and mental health treatment in all five healthcare reform bills. About the Arthur Liman Policy Institute For ten years, LAC's Arthur Liman Policy Institute has conducted a program of research and education and issued ground-breaking reports that have helped shape federal and state policies in multiple areas. About Arthur Liman and the Public Interest Award Arthur Liman’s passion for social justice for the poor, for people with alcohol and drug problems, for people with HIV disease, for people with criminal histories and for everyone else was second to none. Inspired by Arthur’s legacy, the Legal Action Center continues to fight discrimination at every level of society, to pursue enlightened public policy, and to help people reclaim their lives and maintain their dignity. To honor his memory and his selfless commitment to both the public interest and the law, LAC proudly launched the Arthur Liman Policy Institute in November 1998.
