Our Voice In the NY Times: Cuomo’s Plan to Close Prisons Makes Sense

The New York Times editorial board weighed in this month on Governor Andrew Cuomo's plan to close prisons. Like LAC, The Times stresses that unneeded capacity in the state's prisons costs the state millions of dollars that are desperately needed elsewhere.

In a letter published in The Times last Friday, LAC's director, Paul N. Samuels, applauds The Times' stance and urges the state to reinvest in ATI and reentry programs:

"The dramatic reduction in prison population that makes this all possible is due in no small part to the success of the state’s alternative-to-incarceration and re-entry programs. By supporting these programs, New York — unlike other large states like California and Florida — has seen crime and incarceration rates plummet simultaneously."
