Partnership with State Associations of Addiction Services (SAAS)

The State Associations of Addiction Services (SAAS) has become the leading association of drug and alcohol treatment and prevention programs in the nation. Formed over 20 years ago, the current membership of SAAS consists of 42 state associations of providers in 40 states, representing more than 2,000 community-based treatment and prevention programs. In partnership with the Legal Action Center, SAAS disseminates information and provides practical training on the latest research-based treatment and prevention best practices, analyzes and formulates positions and recommendations on key policy issues, educates the public and policy makers, provides technical assistance for treatment providers who wish to access federal grants, and advocates in Washington for increased availability of quality drug and alcohol treatment and prevention services.  In addition, SAAS  sponsors an annual conference for Executives and Senior Managers to meet the continuing challenges around leadership, management, and financial issues.  SAAS also partners with federal agencies and other organizations on many projects to benefit the field.

SAAS' accomplishments include:

  • Successfully advocating for hundreds of millions of dollars in increased funding for drug treatment, prevention, education, and research programs.
  • Supporting the passage of the Children's Health Act of 2000, including re-authorization of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
  • Providing specialized managed care training services to community-based drug and alcohol and mental health agencies.
  • Assisting with the implementation of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment's National Leadership Institute to provide community-based alcohol and drug treatment and prevention programs and provider associations with access to organizational and development resources, technical assistance, written materials, and training materials to meet the challenges of the present health care environment.
