Whoopi Goldberg Joins LAC at Rockefeller Hearings
May 8, 2008
The New York State Assembly held a hearing on May 8, the 35th anniversary of the enactment of the New York State's notorious Rockefeller Drug Laws. Thanks to great film director and LAC Board member Doug Liman and Jason Flom, we were joined by Whoopi Goldberg, who was eager to offer her perspective "as just a normal person and as a New Yorker" about the need to get rid of a law that is causing much more harm than the problem it was intended to address. LAC President and Director Paul N. Samuels and Director of New York State Policy Tracie Gardner (right) had the pleasure of introducing Ms. Goldberg to the Assembly Committee Chairs and other members who attended the hearing. Mr. Samuels also testified on behalf of LAC at the hearing, highlighting "the simple fact is that these laws have not succeeded in reducing drug use, and instead have greatly damaged our communities and society".
